International Day of Women and girls in science is celebrated annually on 11 February to eliminate gender inequalities in Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and encourage more women to pursue careers in these fields. To promote full and equal access to STEM fields for women and girls, the Department of Physics, Nanda Nath Saikia College, in collaboration with the Department of Physics, Devicharan Barua Girls’ College, initiated a Lecture Series. This initiative aims to encourage our students to pursue scientific education and research, foster academic collaboration. The inaugural lecture was delivered by Dr. Binita Pathak, a recipient of the SERB Women Excellence Award. Dr. Pathak serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Dibrugarh University. Her lecture highlighted the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations, with particular emphasis on climate change, sustainable innovation, and inclusive development. She discussed global challenges related to environmental sustainability and underscored the urgency of scientific research in addressing climate change. Dr. Pathak also elaborated on emerging career opportunities in interdisciplinary research areas aligned with the SDGs, especially in climate science, environmental physics, astrobiology and data-driven sustainability studies. Furthermore, she informed students about various national and international fellowships and funding opportunities available for pursuing advanced research in these domains, encouraging young scholars—particularly women—to actively engage in impactful scientific researchThe session concluded with an engaging interactive discussion, where participants actively shared their insights and queries, followed by a formal vote of thanks.
