Celebration of Big Butterfly month: Butterfly counting at Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary 19.09.2024

On 19.09.2024 the students of 3rd Semester of the Department of Zoology and Zoological Society, Nanda Nath Saikia College; along with the students of Jagannath Barooah University (J. B. University), Jorhat went for a field trip to Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary for butterfly counting and to celebrate Big Butterfly Month. This programme was conducted as an activity after the MoU was signed between Department of Zoology, N. N. Saikia College Titabar and J. B. University Jorhat. The journey started at 8 a.m. and the group reached the venue at around 8: 45 am. From Nanda Nath Saikia College, Dr. Manashi Bortamuly and Dr. Samim Dullah accompanied the students. Butterfly expert Mr. Ritupan Baruah guided the students during the field trip and was also the resource person for the day. From J. B. University, Dr. Lok Bahadur Chetry, Assistant Professor accompanied the students during the field trip. At the venue (field), the students of N. N. Saikia College and J. B. University were shuffled and were divided into two groups. The officer of the sanctuary laid down the rules and regulations that should be maintained during the study.
Butterfly counting began at about 9:30 am and the first round was completed by 10 am. A break of about 10 minutes was taken and then the second round of counting started at 10:15 am for about 30 minutes. After some rest, a third round was started at about 11:20 am. A variety of butterfly species were observed like Archduke, Sailor, Bush Brown, Cats Eye, Albatross, Fluffy Tit, Yellow Bird Wing, Tamil Oakblue, Evening Blue, Great Mormon, etc. Some monkey species like Bengal Slow Loris, Stump tailed Macaque, were also observed in the sanctuary. The students and all members present took a light refreshment and reached back college at 2:30 pm.
