The Department of Zoology, N. N. Saikia College celebrated the National Science Day on 28th February, 2023 inside the Department Premises. The programme was conducted in the Lab 1 of Zoology Department in presence of all the students and faculty members of the Department. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Manashi Bortamuly, HoD who also emphasized on the importnace of the National Science Day. Dr. Jafrin Farha Hussain presented an audio-visual talk on popular science topic. She elaborated on the dangerous impacts on earth systems arising due to climate change, with special focus on hill stream fish assemblage. A quiz competition was also organised among the students of the Department where questions on science was asked. The quzmasters were by Dr Samim Dullah and Priyanka Saikia, faculties of the Department. At last prizes were distributed to the First winner team NAMDAPHA, 2nd Winner team KAZIRANGA and 3rd Winner team MANAS by Dr. Manashi Bortamuly, the HoD. The programme ended with a happy note to all the students.
A field survey/study on butterfly counting in Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary was conducted on the occasion of ‘Big Butterfly Month, India’ during the latter part of September, 2020. The study was conducted by the Department of Zoology and Zoological Society of Nanda Nath Saikia College under the guidance of Dr. Manashi Bortamuly, Head of the Department of Zoology and President of Zoological Society of Nanda Nath Saikia College. Butterfly Scientist Dr. Monsunjyoti Gogoi, B.N.H.S and Ph. D. Scholar of NIAS Mr. Abhijit Konwar also collaborated with the team.
Team Members included Dr. Manashi Bortamuly, HOD and President of Zoological Society, NNS College, Titabar, Dr. Monsunjyoti Gogoi, B.N.H.S and Ph. D. Scholar of NIAS Mr. Abhijit Konwar, and few students of the final year of B. Sc of NNS College and also a student of DRC College, New Delhi.
During the survey, 136 individuals were counted during three round of line transect studies. It was found that Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary is rich in the diversity of butterflies as it contains almost all the host plants, necturing plants and resting sites for the available families of the butterflies.
